Fortune ranked Silver Spring, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., first on its list. The city was praised for its arts and entertainment district, diverse population and outdoor amenities.

Fortune reviewed data across five main themes: education, resources for aging adults, general wellness, financial health, and livability. The data came from organizations and agencies, including the Council for Community and Economic Research, Kaiser Family Foundation, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the National Center for Education Statistics, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and more.

Since the ranking is focused on the best places for families, Fortune gave “special consideration to resources for aging adults, livability, and wellness.” In addition, no cities made the list with home sale prices more than twice as high as the state median and/or more than 2.75 times as high as the national median.
