During the Big Ten Conference media day, the Wisconsin football staff was defensive of the ability of transfer quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
Van Dyke, a former Miami Hurricane, played four seasons in Miami before transferring out to join the Wisconsin football program. The quarterback started three seasons for the Hurricanes, but struggled in the final two seasons after multiple staff changes and different coordinators. With statistics on their side, perhaps the Wisconsin football staff truly has an argument about the future success of Van Dyke.

After three years of holding down the starting quarterback role in Miami, Tyler Van Dyke announced he would enter the transfer portal. Soon after, the quarterback committed to the Wisconsin football program, and has since been battling to earn the starting spot back. Van Dyke has been a prized landing for the Wisconsin football staff as they feel he offers them a great chance at winning this upcoming season.

For Van Dyke, there have been some clear trends across his career that have been both positive and negative for the quarterback. Starting with the positive trends across his career, Van Dyke has been an extremely accurate quarterback with a career adjusted completing percentage of 73.8%. An adjusted percentage would calculate drops as well, giving Van Dyke the benefit of the doubt since he cannot catch the balls as well.
However, despite being an accurate quarterback, Van Dyke does not always launch the best of throws which could affect his receiver drop rate. The quarterback has a career big time throw rate of 6.4%, which calculates the amount of throws Van Dyke delivers on time, on target, and down the field.
Van Dyke raised his big time throw percentage to 7.1% during his best college season in 2021, which also happened to be the year he threw for a career-high in yards and touchdowns.

Everyone has something they need to work on, and anyone saying otherwise about themselves is just refusing to accept the truth. Every player can consistently get better, even when at the top of their game, and Van Dyke is no exception.
Regardless of the coordinator situation and different playbooks Van Dyke has had to play through, the quarterback needs to improve certain aspects of his play ahead of this season. For example, the biggest area the quarterback needs to improve upon is his turnover worthy plays, a new statistic that calculates the number of plays Van Dyke risked a turnover due to a throwing error or a fumble.
While the quarterback managed to avoid many of his pressures turning into sacks, they often turned into interceptions instead. Van Dyke had 13 turnover worthy plays last season, with 12 plays turning into interceptions. The quarterback finished the year with a 3.5% rate of turnover worthy plays, which has been a consistent rate across his collegiate career.
If Van Dyke can improve upon this rate, it will make him more of a weapon as a quarterback, and defenses would have to consider his ability when escaping pressure.
