Virginia Tech men’s basketball in the Mix for Three Class of 2025 Guards

So far, so good in terms of recruiting in the Class of 2025 for Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young. So far, the veteran coach has two commitments from three-star Sin’Cere Jones and four-star Christian Gurdak. Both players fill needs on the front court with Jones being a forward and Gurdak being a big presence in the middle as a center.

Looking to add in the backcourt to the class, three recruiting targets, both guards, have trimmed their list of schools down and Virginia Tech made the list for all three players.

Four-star in-state point guard Chance Mallory, from Charlottesville, released his final six schools and the Hokies made the cut, along with other ACC foes. Of course, Tony Bennett and Virginia are on the list, as are Miami, Clemson, Villanova, and Tennessee.

The 5-foot-9 Mallory is the third-ranked player in his class in Virginia according to 247Sports and is ranked 59th nationally. He has set up official visits to some schools and will be in Blacksburg on Sept. 6. He is one of the more sought-after guards in his class and the Hokies will have some tough competition for him.

Omari Witherspoon, the 30th ranked combo guard in the Class of 2025 according to 247Sports, cut his lists of schools down to 10 and the Washington, D.C. native included Young and the Hokies. Also on the list are Maryland, Clemson, Butler, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, George Mason, Xavier, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia.

The one school to watch in this group is Maryland, as Witherspoon, who can play point guard or off the ball and has a visit scheduled to Virginia Tech on Sept. 6, with Mallory, was impressed with a Zoom call he had with the Terrapins that he said went well.

Matt Able, a shooting guard, cut his list to schools and it included the Hokies, who will ben up against Miami, Boston College, Wake Forest, Xavier, Baylopr, Michigan and Northwestern. A rising senior at The Sagemont School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is the 64th-ranked player in the class and the 10th-ranked player in Florida. He is a shooter that makes 3-pointers in bunches and can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket with his 6-foot-5 frame.

Young and his staff would like to add some good guard play in the Class of 2025, but if they are going to get either Able, Mallory, or Witherspoon, they are going to have their work cut out for them against some other good programs.
