Texas A&M football’s Conner Weigman named to preseason watchlist for Maxwell Award

Even though he didn’t make a preseason all-SEC team, Texas A&M football signal caller Conner Weigman still has some hype building around him in this preseason. #15 has been the talk of the town since he rolled into College Station, and he quickly showed that he had the bonafides to back up the hype.

Unfortunately, as Aggie fans know all too well, his has so far been a career marred by a malign mix of overly-complex offensive scheme and one unfortunate injury that heavily reduced the potential playing time he could have had up until this point. Weigman is looking, therefore, to not only lift the Aggies to new heights this year, but to really put the country on notice with his play—a level that those who have been watching closely have no doubt that he has.

As a vote of confidence, then, it makes sense that he was named to the Maxwell Award watchlist. The Maxwell award is presented annually to the best player, regardless of position, and so receiving it is a high honor.

Could Weigman be the top player in college football this year? With this system and his talent, it’s not an impossibility. When you’re having such a discussion, though, the odds will always be astronomically long—just as a simple matter of probability.

When you look at the informal prerequisites for such a status, though, it certainly seems that Weigman meets them. He has the pedigree. He certainly has the talent. He plays at a big time program against the top competition in the nation. And now the system around him looks better positioned than ever to capitalize on his strengths.

All I’m saying is… don’t wait to buy in.
