Two children are dead and several others remain hospitalized in critical condition following a stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in the United Kingdom on Monday, July 29, authorities said.

At a press conference on Monday, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy confirmed the deaths of two children, saying that nine other children have been injured and six are in critical condition. Kennedy added that two adults are also in critical condition.

Officers responded to a property on Hart Street in Southport, England, a seaside town located about 20 miles north of Liverpool, on multiple reports of a stabbing around 11:50 a.m. on Monday, July 29, Merseyside Police previously said in a statement.

Police confirmed that a 17-year-old originally from Cardiff was arrested in connection with the stabbing. Kennedy said at the press conference that he was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Kennedy confirmed during the press conference that the children were attending a Taylor Swift-related event at a dance school when the suspect, armed with a knife, walked into the location and attacked the group.

According to BBC News, The Telegraph, and the Daily Express, the incident occurred near a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class at the Hart Space. The Telegraph reported that the class was advertised for children between the ages 6 and 11.

“We believe that the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked,” Kennedy said.

Authorities said the motive remains unclear and the attack is not being treated as terror-related.
