We have been hearing about NCAA allegations coming for the alleged sign-gate scandal that hung over the Michigan football team during its 2023 national championship season.
If there’s one thing we have learned about the NCAA, they aren’t reasonable. Chris Balas of The Wolverine is reporting that the notice of allegations could be coming this week. You’ll have to subscribe to read the full report, but there is talk of a “postseason ban.”
Connor Stalions was always going to face a show cause. We’ll see what else emerges but the idea of the NCAA pushing for a postseason ban would be insane. There would have to be more evidence than anything we have heard about and even then, it’s hard to justify that.
It wouldn’t be shocking if the NCAA is trying to make an example of the Wolverines. Their power is fading and they really seem to have it in for Michigan football as the selective prosecution of “Burgergate” shows.
Regardless, as long as Michigan is willing to fight the NCAA, which it should do, I don’t think we’ll see a postseason ban. That would be way over the line considering all the other things that have gone on, and like we said, there needs to be evidence.
If the NCAA tries a postseason ban, Michigan needs to fight in court if needed. The NCAA has a terrible record in court and postseason bans are basically a thing of the past anyway.
It doesn’t make sense to punish future athletes for past infractions, regardless of what those infractions were, and as long as Michigan doesn’t bend to the NCAA, I’d say a postseason ban isn’t that likely.
