Kansas City Chiefs Missed Out On 5x Pro Bowl Wide Receiver In Free Agency

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make history in the 2024 NFL season. If they win the Super Bowl again, they will become the first team ever to win it three years in a row. The Green Bay Packers previously won three consecutive NFL Championships on two different occasions, but no team has won three straight Super Bowls.

Of course, the Chiefs are led by two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. Their offense also boasts perennial Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce, who is arguably the best player at his position of this generation.

One area that Kansas City has not been able to add noteworthy players to over the last several seasons is wide receiver. Ever since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins, they have lacked a bonified number one wide receiver. Kelce was the team’s leading pass catcher even with Hill on the team, but the wide receiver room certainly has not been the same since he left.

Of course, it is not like the Chiefs have been struggling without a top-tier wide receiver. After all, they have won the Super Bowl twice without him.

Kansas City signed former Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling after they traded Hill. While MVS did not put-up numbers that were anywhere near Hill’s he did come up big for the team in the two postseasons in which he played with them. Of course, he was released after the season and has since signed with the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs have also utilized the talents of Mecole Hardman, who caught the game-winning touchdown in Kansas City’s last Super Bowl victory. While MVS was not retained by the Chiefs, Hardman has been re-signed for the 2024 NFL season.

Last season, the Chiefs started the process of rebuilding their wide receiver room through the NFL Draft. Rashee Rice had a good season last year as a rookie but was involved in some unfortunate and dangerous situations over the offseason. Kansas City also used their first round pick this year on wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Recently, a five-time Pro Bowl pass catcher revealed he, too, almost joined the Chiefs in free agency.

In a recent interview, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver and former Super Bowl Champion Mike Evans revealed that he considered joining the Chiefs in free agency:

“I mean, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking Houston, Kansas City. I love Pat Mahomes’ game. I’m thinking those two teams. And I’m obviously thinking the Bucs.”

Ultimately, the five-time Pro Bowler decided to re-sign with the only team he has ever played for, partially because his wife wanted to stay where they were.

Evans, a 10-year NFL veteran, has had over 1,000 receiving yards in each season he has played. He holds the NFL record for the most 1,000+ yards seasons in a row to start one’s career.

Last season, he was named Second Team All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl after recording 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and an NFL-leading 13 touchdowns.
