Cowboys Defender Now Out for Season After Major Practice Injury

The Dallas Cowboys were given their first major injury scare of training camp on Sunday after EDGE Sam Williams went down in practice. The pass-rusher was reportedly in a ton of pain and forced to leave the field on a cart while tending to an apparent knee ailment, which was far from promising news.

While fans were hoping for the best, everyone’s fears were confirmed Sunday evening.

The MRI confirmed that promising DE Sam Williams is out for the season with a torn ACL. Brutal. https://t.co/MRZZCHfkj8

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Williams has, in fact, torn his ACL in his left knee after going down. That was the worst-case scenario, as this major injury will now cost the young pass-rusher the entire 2024 season.

This is a devastating blow for Dallas. Williams has been a very reliable contributor off the edge since being drafted by the Cowboys, notching 4.0 and 4.5 sacks (plus three forced fumbles total) in each of his first two seasons.

Following the losses of Dante Fowler and Dorance Armstrong in free agency this summer, Williams was set to take on an even bigger role on this pass rush. And Dallas was depending on him to do just that since it failed to bring in much noteworthy veteran help this offseason.

Now, Williams absence creates a massive hole on the depth chart. It could be on rookie Marshan Kneeland and 2023 fourth-rounder Villami Fehoko (who didn’t play in a single game as a rookie last year) to step up as depth options unless the ‘Boys add some help here.
