A disappointing season for the New Jersey Devils will seemingly end without their superstar player.
The team announced on Tuesday afternoon that center Jack Hughes will have shoulder surgery this week, thus missing the Devils’ final four games of the season.
“In recent conversations with Jack, his family and representatives, the Devils’ athlete care staff, and Devils’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow, it was determined that Jack should be held out of game action for the rest of this season and proceed with shoulder surgery,” the Devils said in a statement.
“He will undergo the surgery on April 10, which will be performed by Dr. Peter Millett in Vail, Colorado. Hughes is expected to make a full recovery to be available for 2024 New Jersey Devils Training Camp.”
New Jersey plays back-to-back games against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday and Thursday, before closing out the season with games against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday and the New York Islanders on Monday.
The Devils sit five points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the final Wild Card spot.
Hughes, 22, finishes with 74 points in 62 games, a year after setting the franchise record in a season with 99 points. The American star already missed multiple stints this season with injuries, missing five games in November and then a month from Jan. 6 to Feb. 6 with a shoulder ailment.
