(COLORADO SPRINGS) — People from several different countries were sworn in as the newest U.S. citizens on Friday, July 26, during a naturalization ceremony in Colorado Springs.
The Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) offers study groups for adults called Path to Citizenship, which helps prepare students to take the U.S. Naturalization test for citizenship. Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade, an immigrant himself, was in attendance on Friday to help the new citizens celebrate.
For the past eight to 10 weeks, these new citizens went over the test and participated in practice interviews. The sessions are offered at no cost and support people as they strive to become new U.S. citizens.
“It has been seven years that I’ve worked with Pikes Peak Library District, and this journey has been, what, 13, 12 years being spent over in my home country, and then persevered, come back again, and I never gave up. That’s what it is,” said Nawal Shahril, a former PPLD employee and newly naturalized citizen.
Mayor Yemi Mobolade congratulated the new citizens on his Facebook page, and recalled his own path to citizenship.
“Seven years ago, I stood in that same room and took my oath of allegiance to support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and commit myself to the principles and values that define this nation,” said Mayor Mobolade. “I remember it as though it was yesterday. It was a moment that changed my life forever, and I am thrilled to share in their joy and pride today.”
There are 100 civics questions on the naturalization test, and during the interview, future U.S. citizens are asked up to 10 questions. They must answer six out of the 10 questions correctly to pass the civics test.
