I get that it’s good, as a rule, to enter a season with low expectations when you have a first year head coach (or maybe just any season as a Texas A&M football fan). But I can’t help but have a sneaking good feeling about 2024.
This offseason has at times felt interminable. Other times, I’ve wondered where exactly the months have gone. We’ve been lucky to have exciting postseason runs in basketball and baseball to help occupy the time, as well as no shortage of off-field antics, not to mention highly active portal sessions for Elko and Earley.
All that to say, it’s hard to believe fall camp is in just over a week. It was reported today by Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle that the Aggies will hold their first fall camp practice on July 31.
Texas A&M’s first training camp practice under Mike Elko is July 31. The Aggies open their first season under Elko exactly a month later at Kyle Field, Aug. 31 against Notre Dame in a Saturday night game.

You don’t often pair “fall” and “July” together, especially not in Texas. But if it means the season is that much closer, you won’t hear me complaining. What with the indoor facility we have now, too, I guess the heat isn’t as much of a factor as it would be otherwise.
There is no shortage of storylines to examine ahead of the season, even still. With the length of the college football offseason being what it is, the time for speculation is protracted, so we come up with question after question and invent answer after answer. I think BJ Mayes will be a great player at corner—I guess I don’t know, though. I think the OL will be far better under Adam Cushing, but we have yet to see it in action.
This is the first bellwether of the approaching season. Pressers, practice videos, and the like will soon ramp up. Then, before you know it, it’s game week.
The time is almost here. The first season under Mike Elko. The first season in a new SEC—a new college football. The 12-team playoff will be in place for the first time ever as well. In just one week, we are officially in the preseason.
