Kyron Drones doesn’t sugarcoat expectations for Virginia Tech in 2024

Expectations are always high for each college football team when a new season begins. It’s a fresh start for everyone regardless of how well things went or didn’t go the previous season.

As Virginia Tech turns the page to 2024, expectations are high for the first time in some time in Blacksburg. The Hokies return nearly all their production on both sides of the ball off a team that won six of their last nine games of 2023, while also making some big additions in the transfer portal over the offseason.

Head coach Brent Pry, quarterback Kyron Drones, cornerback Dorian Strong, and defensive lineman Antwaun Powell-Ryland all were in Charlotte Tuesday for ACC Football Media Day. It was their turn along with Virginia, Pittsburgh, California, and Stanford to take the stage and discuss the upcoming season.

A lot of questions were asked of the players and their head coach, but Drones had an answer to a question that should be music to Hokies’ fan’s ears. He was asked what his expectations were for the 2024 season and his answer was one that Virginia Tech fans have been waiting to hear for some time.

“My expectations are to win the ACC Championship. Just going out there and dominating week by week, winning every game. This is a team very capable of having and undefeated season. Just going out there to win the ACC Championship, get into the playoffs and then leaving our mark.”

Those are music to Hokies fan’s ears. Drones is going to have plenty of play-makers on offense with four receivers returning as well as Bhayshul Tuten in the backfield, along with most of the offensive line. Add in a defense that also had a ton of retainment and some big transfer additions along the line, and it’s easy to see why there’s hype surrounding the program. Now it’s just a matter of going out and trying to meet them after Drones didn’t sugarcoat his expectations.
