The expectation for Ohio State football in 2024 remains championship or bust. After 12 straight seasons of posting near-perfect seasons, the Buckeyes have hoisted just one championship trophy (2014). Now, with Michigan Jim Harbaugh-less and Alabama void of legendary head coach Nick Saban, Ohio State has a clear path to its third title in the 21st century. The Buckeyes have done their due diligence to add to their team this offseason, adding elite talent via the transfer portal and strengthening their coaching staff. Most notable on the coaching side, the pioneer of the spread option offense, Chip Kelly, will serve as the team’s OC next fall.
Kelly acted as the head coach with the UCLA Bruins from 2018 to 2023 but left to join the Ohio State football program as their offensive play-caller for the 2024 season. Kelly will coach under Ryan Day, with the latter working with Kelly during their time together at New Hampshire and with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers of the NFL. During the beginning of Big Ten Media Days, Day praised his longtime friend and now offensive coordinator.

Ohio State frontman Ryan Day did not mince words when talking about his newest offensive play-caller, Chip Kelly. “I trust Chip (Kelly) with my life,” said Day during Tuesday’s rendition of Big Ten Media Days, per The Athletic’s Brett McMurphy. Day and Kelly’s relationship dates back to their time at New Hampshire in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with Kelly serving as the team’s offensive coordinator and Day as a player turned tight ends coach. After five seasons of sharing the same sideline, Day darted for a GA job with Boston College.

The duo reconnected in 2015, with Day serving as the quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelly’s last season as the head coach with the NFC East squad. Kelly left to fill the San Francisco 49ers head coaching vacancy the following year, with Day following under the same job title. The tandem owns a combined 131-49 record while serving as a head coach.

After 14 straight seasons as a head coach, Chip Kelly will strictly operate as an offensive coordinator next fall. Kelly previously spent the past six seasons with the UCLA Bruins, posting a top-20 offense regarding points per game three separate times. Meanwhile, during his tenure with the Oregon Ducks from 2007 to 2012, Oregon owned a top-20 offense each season, highlighted by scoring a FBS-high 47 points per game in 2010.
Ohio State football will also operate with a new signal-caller in 2024, Kansas State transfer Will Howard. The six-foot-four, 235-pound passer accumulated 39 passing touchdowns against 14 picks across the past two seasons. He also scored 12 times via the ground during that stretch. Ohio State will also house the best running back duo in the country, TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. Henderson has rushed for 2,745 yards and 32 touchdowns across 31 games with the Buckeyes, while Judkins transferred from Ole Miss after back-to-back 1,100-yard rushing seasons.
