Florida quarterback Graham Mertz is embracing his role as a team leader heading into the 2024 season. The sixth-year senior wasn’t necessarily a fan favorite when it was announced he would be transferring to Florida from Wisconsin, but his overall play, combined with his grit and determination, quelled most fear Gator fans may have had.
Speaking with reporters at SEC Media Days last week, Mertz made it known that despite a 5-7 season in 2023, Florida isn’t entering the 2024 season with a woe-is-me mindset.
“I think you see complete buy-in,” Mertz said. “As a team, that’s what you need. You need players leading and you need buy-in.”
Mertz praised the talent and leadership of his receiving corps, highlighted by transfers Chimere Dike and Elijhah Badger along with the return of Tre Wilson. Mertz has played previously with Dike at Wisconsin, and the Gators are hoping that the speed of Wilson, Badger, and others like Aiden Mizell and Tank Hawkins will help spread out defenses to allow for more deep shots in 2024 compared to what we saw in 2023.
The quarterback expressed excitement about the upcoming season and the challenges presented by the SEC.
“The cool part about this wonderful league is just across the board the amount of passion the fan bases have, the players have, the coaches have for the university,” Mertz said.
Mertz’s leadership extends beyond the field. He has developed a strong relationship with former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who has become a mentor. “He has been an absolute blessing for me,” Mertz said.
Part of what it takes to be a successful QB in the SEC isn’t just throwing the ball to open receivers. It’s being the face and leader of a program and entails a ton of moments we, as fans, will never see. But based on everything Mertz has been saying this offseason, he has no qualms about stepping up and being that leader for the Gators.
