5-star Texas A&M football target delays commitment; Could A&M pull coup over Oregon?

Texas A&M football fans should well know that recruiting is an arena in which it is hard to follow all of the twists and turns. Especially when we’re talking about some of the nation’s top prospects, things can run hot and cold very quickly, as every program will be going all-out to win a commitment.

With that in mind, we can say with confidence that these things are never over until the signature is on the dotted line—and, with the transfer portal, it goes even beyond that now. We’ve even seen players portal out after being in school for only a few months.

This line of logic was one that Aggie fans were speaking to one another as things looked like they were headed in the wrong direction with five-star DB target Trey McNutt. The highly-coveted player out of Shaker Heights, OH, though the Aggies were in his top two schools, seemed to be headed to Eugene, Oregon, with his decision that was scheduled for July 19.

All of a sudden, however, with about 24 hours to go, reports began to come out that the Aggies were making one last push for his services. These were tempered with words about high amounts of Oregon optimism, but there was a tinge of doubt that the Ducks were as sure of a thing as they were previously.

Then, McNutt announces that he will be pushing back his decision to August 3rd.

I’m just reading the tea leaves here, but this seems like a great sign for the Aggies. If I had to guess, this means that Elko and company’s efforts paid off, and McNutt decided to take more time to think about it.

This is big time recruiting at its finest. The Aggies may still end up losing out on this one in the end, but we’re seeing that they’re not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the biggest names in the nation on the trail.
