Ekeler began his high school football career at only 5-foot-5. Despite those size limitations, he would end his career rushing for over 5,000 yards and 71 touchdowns. He also had 10 receiving touchdowns. Ekeler’s size was a deterrent for the next level, as he received no FBS interest. Four schools did offer Ekeler a scholarship, but three wanted to move him to the defensive side of the ball. Ekeler chose Western Colorado, where he would have a record-breaking career, rushing for 5,857 yards and 55 touchdowns while also catching 115 passes and eight touchdowns.
He went undrafted in 2017, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. It was there he met then-Chargers head coach, Anthony Lynn. They spent four seasons together and reunited this offseason when Lynn came to Washington as the new run game coordinator/running backs coach. In seven seasons with the Chargers, Ekeler established himself as the NFL’s premier receiving back, catching 440 passes and 84 touchdowns. He also rushed for 4,355 yards and 39 touchdowns.
