BREAKING: Minnesota Vikings Sign Top-10 Draft Pick J.J. McCarthy

Denver Broncos JJ McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings had one of the most notable selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. This is because they took J.J. McCarthy from Michigan with the 10th overall pick. He was the quarterback who led Michigan to a national championship victory last season.

Now, reports have revealed that the Vikings and McCarthy have agreed to a deal. What does this contract look like? How does it compare to other quarterbacks drafted ahead of McCarthy? Read below to find out the answers to those questions and more.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Minnesota Vikings and rookie QB J.J. McCarthy have agreed to terms. McCarthy will receive $21.85 million over the next four years. Of that money, $12.71 million comes in the form of a signing bonus and there will also be a fifth-year option attached to this contract.

So, how does McCarthy’s contract compare to other rookies drafted this season? Recently, the ninth overall draft pick, Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze, signed a 4-year deal worth around $22 million.

The top two quarterbacks selected in this draft are notable as well. Jayden Daniels was the second overall pick and was taken by the Washington Commanders. His contract is worth around $38 million over the next four years.

Of course, we have the top overall pick in this past draft, rookie QB Caleb Williams. As expected, he got the largest deal of any rookie on the board. Williams will receive $39 million over the next four years. On top of this, rumors surfaced that he tried to put a clause in his contract to prevent the Bears from placing the franchise tag on him in the future.

Tonight, Vikings fans can sleep easier now that they know their rookie quarterback has been secured. Now, the question is when are we going to see McCarthy make his Vikings debut?

There is not an obvious answer to his question. He is not the automatic Week 1 starter due to competition from veteran QB Sam Darnold. With that in mind, Darnold may get the first crack at the starting quarterback job when Minnesota begins its season on the road in Darnold’s old home, MetLife Stadium. Still, it is safe to assume we will see McCarthy take snaps in a game at some point this season.
