Chiefs Sign Another Playmaker to Kick Off Camp

The Chiefs announced a roster move on Wednesday as the rookie portion of minicamp begins, signing undrafted Slippery Rock WR Kyle Sheets.

He originally signed a priority free agent deal with the Saints after the NFL Draft after being twice named an All-PSAC honoree and AP Division II All-American. The six-foot-four, two hundred-and-twenty-pound receiver caught 76 passes for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, highlighted by a 210-yard effort against Millersville.

Kansas City suddenly has a deep WR room, with players like Nikko Remigio shining throughout the summer while more established veterans hope to keep their roster spot. Throwing Sheets into the mix only complicates matters, though he’ll likely wind up as a practice squad player at best this year.

In 51 games for Slippery Rock, Sheets compiled 154 receptions for 2,440 yards and 29 touchdowns. He averaged 15.8 yards per catch overall, showcasing his skills as a deep threat with keen ball-tracking ability.

It’s unlikely that Sheets fits into the organization’s plans for 2024, though he could perhaps carve out a role on future rosters. At the least, he’ll add some juice to a heavily-criticized position group determined to make up for last season’s mistakes.

Kyle Sheets is a WR prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 9.44 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 190 out of 3402 WR from 1987 to 2024. pic.twitter.com/INdy7rqRSY

The Chiefs led the NFL in drops (44) despite winning their second straight Super Bowl. Brett Veach clearly prioritized improving the room, signing Hollywood Brown in free agency and trading up for Xavier Worthy in the draft.

If those moves pay off, Kansas City’s offense could return to the heights of Patrick Mahomes’ early years. Adding Sheets represents a low-cost, high-upside signing. At the least, it doesn’t hurt anything and gives the veterans more competition.

Maybe Sheets has an excellent camp and forces his way up the depth chart, though I’d expect this acquisition to be more about getting another body out there than anything. Nonetheless, his profile is exciting and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do at camp.
