Harris, formerly a U.S. senator and California attorney general, is the 49th vice president of the United States. She is at the top of the speculative list of potential candidates to replace Biden at the top of the ticket if he were to withdraw from the race, as a growing number of top Democrats are suggesting.

Who is Kamala Harris and where was she born?

Harris was born on Oct. 20, 1964, in Oakland as the daughter of immigrants.

Her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor at Stanford University, and her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was a cancer researcher.

Donald Harris emigrated from Jamaica and stayed involved in politics as an economic adviser to several Jamaican prime ministers throughout his career. He came to the University of California, Berkeley, in 1961 for graduate study and received a Ph.D. in economics.

Kamala Harris’ mother immigrated to the U.S. in 1958 from India. She went on to receive a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, where she met her now ex-husband.

Harris’ family moved from California to Champaign, Illinois, so her parents could pursue jobs at the University of Illinois.

He graduated from the University of California, Northridge, in 1987 and obtained a law degree from the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law.
