Virginia Tech men’s basketball face challenging 2024-25 non-conference schedule

Over the last couple of months, the 2024-25 non-conference opponents for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team have been slowly released. Thursday, the school officially announced its non-conference schedule with two additions from the previous nine contests that were released.

The Hokies announced their non-conference games with the season beginning at home at Cassell Coliseum on Nov. 4 against Delaware State. USC Upstate will visit on Nov. 8, the night before the football team hosts Clemson at Lane Stadium, and then on Veterans Day, Virginia Tech will welcome Winthrop to Blacksburg. On Nov. 15, the Hokies will play Penn State in Baltimore followed by a home game five nights later against Jacksonville. Mike Young and his team will head to Florida to play in the Fort Myers Top-Off, opening with Michigan on Nov. 25, then will play either Xavier or South Carolina two nights later.

Virginia Tech will host former Hokies’ MJ Collins and Tyler Nickel on Dec. 4 as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge this season when Vanderbilt comes to Blacksburg. North Carolina A&T visits on Dec. 12 and Navy on Dec. 15 before Tech closes out the non-conference schedule at The Palestra on Dec. 21 against Saint Joseph’s before ACC play begins.

This will be a challenging schedule for Young and his new-look team after a mass exodus following last season in the transfer portal. Virginia Tech lost some key players that had eligibility to return and it forced Young and his staff to build a roster from the transfer portal along with some key recruits expected to step in and make a contribution this upcoming season.

The ACC schedule will be announced at a later date and this season, it’ll include SMU, California, and Stanford, the three new schools that are joining the conference for this year.
