President Joe Biden is facing even more pressure to quit the 2024 presidential race, with two key Democratic allies Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer reportedly privately telling him his time is up as he grapples with a Covid diagnosis and a resurgent Donald Trump going from strength to strength since surviving an assassination attempt.
The former House speaker and Senate majority leader have reportedly each held separate talks with the president in recent days, warning that he cannot beat Trump and risks dragging down the entire party in November.
While publicly Biden has vowed he will stay on the ticket, a source told CNN he is now “more receptive to calls of concern” about his prospects. Reporting by Axios and NOTUS suggests he could drop out as soon as this weekend.
On Wednesday, Biden was forced to pull out of a campaign stop in Las Vegas after he tested positive for the coronavirus.
The White House insists he is only experiencing “mild symptoms” but Biden was seen gingerly walking up the steps of Air Force One in Nevada.
The diagnosis came just hours after the president said he would bow out only “if doctors came to me and said you got this problem, that problem”.

1721339735Pushback from Biden camp against senior Democrats calling for him to step aside
Mike Memoli of NBC News reports on some blunt pushback against calls for Joe Biden to step aside from a source close to the president, who blamed senior Democratic leadership of making the wrong call in 2015, choosing Hillary Clinton over Biden, resulting in Donald Trump.
“Can we all just remember for a minute that these same people who are trying to push Joe Biden out are the same people who literally gave us all Donald Trump? In 2015, Obama, Pelosi, Schumer pushed Biden aside in favor of Hillary; they were wrong then, and they are wrong now,” the source told NBC News.
The source pointed to polling in the 2016 election that found Hillary Clinton leading by as much as 9 points.
“How did all this work out for everyone in 2016? Perhaps we should learn a few lessons from 2016; one of them is polls are BS, just ask Sec. Clinton. And two, maybe, just maybe, Joe Biden is more in touch with actual Americans than Obama-Pelosi-Schumer?” the source added.

The relief for roughly 35,000 borrowers was announced Thursday by the Education Department and made through changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which benefits workers such as teachers, nurses and firefighters. Those qualifying for forgiveness have their remaining loan balance eliminated after making 120 qualifying monthly payments.

Vice President Kamala Harris has returned to Washington, DC, from a campaign event in North Carolina.
After landing at Joint Base Andrews, Harris boarded Marine 2 without taking questions from the press, including whether she had spoken with President Joe Biden today.
It was notable that the VP did not talk with the pool once during her trip to North Carolina, either on or off the record. She almost always makes at least a brief effort to do so on her travels.
