3 Texas Women’s Basketball storylines going into the 2024-25 season

With it being the Longhorn’s first season in the Southeastern Conference, many storylines surround Texas Women’s Basketball. Some reporters think they will get a wake-up call taking on some of the toughest SEC Women’s Basketball teams next season.

The South Carolina Gamecocks could have another undefeated season ahead of them. Will Rori Harmon be ready for conference play after recovering from her ACL injury last season? Let’s answer some of those questions below to prepare for the upcoming basketball season.

Harmon is coming along fine with her ACL rehab. She was spotted in the gym over the summer, doing drills without restrictions. However, Texas Women’s Basketball Head Coach Vic Schaefer will have an interesting decision to make during non-conference play this fall. Would it be wise to hold Harmon out of non-conference games vs. teams like the University of Texas at Arlington or play her?

Schaefer will need Harmon’s experience on the court during conference games. I would guess Schaefer would restrict her minutes during those types of games. The last thing the Longhorns need going into SEC play is her being out with another injury. You should expect her to have some minute restrictions during “powder puff” teams.

This is another great question because college basketball coaches love to use non-conference games to fix their lineups for conference play. I wouldn’t be shocked if Schaefer did have different lineups throughout their non-conference schedule this fall. It will be a great way to see if different players work well with others. With all the transfers and freshman on the team this season, Why not take the time to see if one of the freshman can contribute off the bench in conference play?

Laila Phelia was one of the big pickups Schefer got from the transfer portal this summer. She will have an important role with the Longhorns. She does average 16 points a game as a guard and will probably replace Harmon on the court when she needs a break.

I don’t believe that Schaefer will have her and Harmon on the court together unless they are trailing by a couple of points in the fourth quarter. Whatever role Schaefer gives her will benefit the Longhorns on the court.
