Ohio State baseball has added another MLB draft pick.
Left-handed starting pitcher Gavin Bruni was selected by the Washington Nationals as the No. 500 overall pick in the 17th round of the 2024 MLB draft Tuesday. He is the first Buckeye to be selected in the 2024 draft.
The last time the first Ohio State baseball player was selected in the MLB draft was at No. 500 or lower was in 2017 when right-handed pitcher Shea Murray was selected with the No. 538 pick.
Bruni, an Alliance, Ohio, native, played three seasons at Ohio State and appeared in 35 games for the Buckeyes.
In 2024, Bruni appeared in 12 games and posted a 6.19 ERA. he had 54 strikeouts in 52.1 innings pitched. He allowed 1.66 walks or hits per inning pitched.
As a sophomore in 2023, Bruni posted a career-low 4.87 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 57.1 innings pitched.
Coming out of Alliance High School, Bruni was the No. 1 Ohio prospect in the 2021 class after recording 209 strikeouts in 107 career innings pitched. He was a Division I All-Ohio second-team honoree in 2021.
In 2023, Ohio State had three players selected in the MLB draft: pitcher Isaiah Coupet (No. 109 Colorado Rockies), pitcher Josh Timmerman (No. 482 Milwaukee Brewers) and outfielder Kade Kern (No. 519 Atlanta Braves).
Two Ohio State players are currently in the MLB: Seattle Mariners outfielder Dominic Canzone and Colorado Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jacob Bosiokovic was called up to the major league roster June 30, but was optioned back to Triple-A without making his major league debut July 5.
