The 2024 SEC Media Days in Dallas kicked off on Monday, and there was plenty to be said about newcomer Texas.
The Longhorns are coming off their best season in a long while, making the College Football Playoff and grabbing a win over Nick Saban’s Alabama before his retirement.
That win in Tuscaloosa solidified Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian as true contenders. With Quinn Ewers returning to the 40-acres and loads of talent on the roster, its tempting to pick Texas as a favorite in its first year in the SEC.
However, sportscaster Saban believes it won’t be as smooth sailing as fans would like.
“You know what kind of tickles me is all these people asking these questions about how Texas always ran the conference they ran, they’re not going to run the SEC,” Saban said.
They’ll be a good team and a great program and Sark is going to do a great job, but that’s not going to be a problem.”
Saban highly praised the Longhorns during the 2023-2024 season, calling Sarkisian “one of the best coaches we’ve ever had” after the Texas coach became the first of Saban’s assistants to defeat him on his home turf. The Longhorns also signed away a few of the players who left Alabama after Saban’s retirement, with receiver Isaiah Bond being the highlight.
UT has a favorable schedule for the 2024-2025 season, with highlight games against Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgia and Texas A&M. While Saban proceeded to pick Texas as one of the teams to make the SEC Championship, another 11-1 finish in the regular season might be difficult after losing plenty of talent to the NFL draft.
