The Giants selected Penn State standout Theo Johnson in the fourth round of this year’s draft as a backup plan in case veteran Darren Waller retired. Waller announced before the start of the mandatory minicamp that he is retiring to pursue a music career.
Theo Johnson was expected to have a significant role this seasonEast Rutherford, NJ — June 11, 2024 — Tight end, Theo Johnson at the NY Giants Mandatory Minicamp at their practice facility in East Rutherford, NJ.
As previously discussed on GH by Matt Lombardo, Johnson was expected to have a significant role in the Giants offense this season:
As a rookie, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Giants deploy Johnson both as an in-line pass-catching tight end and also line him up at times in the backfield as an H-back type role.
Landing in New York, who also selected field-stretching wide receiver Malik Nabers in the first round of the draft, should create plenty of opportunities for Johnson to be productive underneath and perhaps develop into a security-blanked and red-zone weapon for quarterback Daniel Jones.

However, Johnson’s transition to the league has taken a hitch. Per the league’s transaction wire, the Giants revealed Johnson was injured. They placed him on the physically unable to perform list. The type of injury Johnson suffered was not specified on the transaction wire.
The Giants can take Johnson off the PUP list as soon as he passes a physical.
