Grading Yankees roster performances at 2024 All-Star break

Where Yankees, Mets stand after Subway Series, and what’s next for them

Yankees writer Pete Caldera and Mets writer Andrew Tredinnick break down the state of the two teams and biggest hurdles before their next meeting.

NEW YORK − The All-Star break is here, and the Yankees’ first-half grades are in – a little past the midterm, but you get the idea.

As a club, the Yankees reached their high-water mark on June 15, entering play with a 50-22 record and a three-and-a-half game AL East lead.

Since then, the Yankees have lost 18 of their last 26 games, dropping a game behind the first-place Baltimore Orioles – a team they face just once more in the regular season, in late September.

Here are our grades:

Aaron Judge: A

At Camden Yards, a divided crowd alternately chanted “M-V-P!’’ whenever Judge or Gunnar Henderson batted.

Juan Soto: A

He’s been the on-base machine and lineup presence the Yankees desperately needed in front of Judge.

Luis Gil: A-

May’s AL pitcher and rookie of the month should have made the All-Star team, despite that three-start slide.

Michael Tonkin: B+

Let go by both the Twins and Mets in April, the right-hander eventually earned more high-leverage spots and has made a difference.

Luke Weaver: B+

Took up the challenge of filling that multi-inning reliever void created by Michael King’s trade.

Clarke Schmidt: B+

Eleven mostly solid starts, a few that went short, before he landed on the IL due to a strained lat.

Tommy Kahnle: B

Activated from the IL on May 22 (shoulder). After some early stumbles, he’s back in the bullpen’s Circle of Trust.

Giancarlo Stanton: B

His game-breaking presence has been missed since June 23, when he landed on the IL (strained hamstring).

Clay Holmes: B

Made the All-Star team in his free agent walk year, could be in his final months as Yankees closer.

Marcus Stroman: B

A steady presence, with a positive influence on his rotation mates.

Ben Rice: B

Learning on the job at first base but looking comfortable already as a big-league hitter.

Nestor Cortes: B-

If he only pitched in the Bronx, Nasty Nestor would get an A+ (1.81 home ERA vs. 6.04 road ERA).

Anthony Volpe: C+

Uneven, streaky first half but the Gold Glove shortstop defense has been there for the most part.

Carlos Rodon: C

Searching again, with a 9.67 ERA in his last six starts following a 2.93 ERA in his first 14 starts.

Austin Wells: C

Picked it up after a rough offensive start, including a .929 OPS over his last 13 games, since June 29.

Jose Trevino: C

Possibly on the way to losing more at-bats to Wells when he landed on the IL Sunday (quad strain).

Trent Grisham: C-

Anchored to the bench for the first two-plus months of the season. Plus-defense, occasional power.

Oswaldo Cabrera: C-

Posted a .303 batting average and .838 OPS over his first 18 games, .210/.536 in 55 games since.

Anthony Rizzo: D

Having an all-around difficult season when he suffered an arm fracture June 16 at Boston.

Gleyber Torres: D

OPS has dropped from .800 in 158 games last year to .654 in 93 games this season.

Ian Hamilton: D

Charged with seven runs over his last four outings, then landed on the IL (strained lat) in mid-June.

Jahmai Jones: D

Has survived in a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency role.

DJ LeMahieu: D-

In just 37 games off the IL (foot fracture) his 117 largely empty at-bats and loss of quickness defensively can’t be ignored.

Caleb Ferguson: F

Passed by the likes of Jake Cousins and Tim Hill (released by the White Sox) in any leveraged spots.

Victor Gonzalez: F

Designated for assignment after 27 appearances, now pitching at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Dennis Santana: F

Designated for assignment after 23 appearances, now pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Manager Aaron Boone: B

Has the support of his players through a stormy period since mid-June, after a hot start. Only the final grade matters, seeking the first pennant in his seventh season at the helm.

GM Brian Cashman: C+

Having to patch the tire with some relief retreads. Promoting Rice was a solid decision, but corner infield and bullpen upgrades by the July 30 trade deadline could factor into the final grade.

Incomplete grades

Pitchers Gerrit Cole, Tim Hill, Jake Cousins, Josh Maciejewski, Cody Poteet, Nick Burdi, Ron Marinaccio; infielders Jon Berti, JD Davis.
