South Florida Trump supporters hope assassination attempt can unify U.S.

MIAMI — Mariam Alonso remembers when President Ronald Reagan was shot. It was 1981 and she was in college.

She said it was “shocking” to see another assassination attempt — this time against former President Donald Trump who was shot and injured on Saturday while campaigning at a Pennsylvania rally.

The historic moment was captured in photos and video showing Trump bleeding and pumping his fist in the air as he was shielded by the Secret Service. Trump supporter Barbara Saud said the fist pump sent chills down her spine.

Frank Cantero is worried this could be where political division hits a boiling point, and wants this to be a reminder to lower the temperature.

CBS News Miami asked him if he thinks this assassination attempt can unify or further divide the country.

“I think it may divide the country for the immediate future but hopefully it will be the first steps to reunify it,” Cantero said.

Shortly after the shooting, supporters lined Southwest 8th Street with their Make America Great Again hats and flags, condemning the violence.

“We are in 2024 guys. That cannot be allowed in this country,” said Alexander Pena, a Trump supporter.
