The FBI has named the suspect who opened fire at a Donald Trump rally in Butler County, Pa., on Saturday, July 13.

A 20-year-old man, Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was named by the FBI as subject involved in what authorities are describing as an assassination attempt on the former president. The FBI said the investigation into the incident is “active and ongoing.”

Following the shooting, the Secret Services announced that the shooter had been neutralized by authorities and was declared deceased. One person at the rally was killed and two others were critically injured.

Kevin Rojek, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Field Office in Pittsburgh, confirmed at a press conference late on Saturday, July 13, that the shooting was an “assassination attempt” of former President Trump.

Rojek said authorities were not yet able to identify the shooter. He said authorities do not know the shooter’s motive.

Authorities said at the press conference that they have no reason to think anyone else was involved in the shooting, but the matter remains under investigation.

The fatal victim of the shooting, along with the two critically wounded victims, were all adult males, say authorities. Authorities say they know the identity of all three people, but are not releasing that information at this time.

Two people who were critically wounded are being treated at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, about an hour from Butler County.

The two patients are in “critical condition,” Dan Laurent, a spokesperson for the hospital, tells PEOPLE.

He did not comment on the nature of the injuries.Laurent says the former president was not brought to Allegheny General.

An eyewitness told the BBC he saw a man with a rifle just before the shooting that took place at Trump’s campaign rally.

In an interview with the witness — identified by the outlet only as Greg — said he saw the man crawl on top of a building outside the event, minutes before gunfire was aimed at Trump, 78.

“We noticed the guy bear-crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50 feet away from us,” Greg told the outlet. “… He had a rifle. We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

“There were three pops over to my left. Pop, pop, pop — and my first thought was, ‘What are they doing setting of firecrackers? Its not a good thing to do, it’s a crowd … the next president’s up there. Oh my God, what’s wrong with people?’ ”

“During former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on the evening of July 13th at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue,” the Secret Service said in a statement on social media. “US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and the former president is safe and being evaluated.”

According to the Secret Service, one spectator was killed and two spectators were critically injured.

“The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of investigation,” the statement said.
