North Dakota Town Among The Most Difficult To Pronounce In USA

We have a lot of difficult town names to pronounce in the state of North Dakota.

Pembina, Steele, Neche, New Leipzig, Ypsilanti, Des Lacs, Kulm, and Monango are just some of the towns that locals struggle with.  Throw in out of staters, and even cities like Minot and Mandan get butchered.

(You can get the full list of cities nobody can pronounce in North Dakota (volume 1) here and (volume 2) again here.)

Now, Reader’s Digest, the little magazine you used to find in doctor’s and dentist’s offices everywhere has decided to get in on the fun.

They decided to track down the most difficult town to pronounce in each state.  Surprisingly, their choice for North Dakota did NOT make either one of our two lists.

Before we get to Reader’s Digest’s choice for North Dakota, let’s unveil their pick for our neighboring states.

Minnesota: The city of Wayzata.  Wayzata is a suburb of Minneapolis just west of the metro off of Interstate 494.

The correct way to pronounce Wayzata is (Why-zet-uh).  My mother is from the Twin Cities, so this is something that I’ve known since I was a child, but I can see how people can destroy this pronunciation by the spelling.

South Dakota: The city of Pukwana.  Pukwana is located west of Sioux Falls on Interstate 90.

The correct way to pronounce Pukwana is (Puck-wah-na).  It is a very small town with only 285 residents and even has a bar called Puk U Bar.  I need to have a drink there someday.
