Georgia Bulldogs Under Fire Again As 2 More Players Become Involved In New Legal Troubles

The Georgia Bulldogs are once again under fire from the rest of the college football world due to star players finding themselves in legal trouble.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Johnathan “Bo” Hughley was arrested Tuesday and senior linebacker Smael Mondon was arrested Wednesday. Both were arrested on driving-related charges.

Both Bo Hughley and Smael Mondon only spent under two hours in jail before a $26 bond allowed them to be released.

Official UGA police arrested Hughley who was charged with reckless driving as well as failure to maintain lane. Hughley was arrested after an investigation looked into a single-car accident.

Mondon was not arrested by UGA police, he was instead arrested by Athens-Clarke County police. Mondon was charged with reckless driving and racing.

The two arrests featuring Mondon and Hughley are just the most recent in a long line of driving-related legal troubles for Georgia football players.

Earlier this offseason star transfer running back Trevor Etienne was arrested for a DUI and reckless driving charges. Etienne’s DUI charges were dropped and he ended up pleading no contest to the reckless driving charge. Etienne pleaded guilty to underage possession of alcohol along with two other driving offenses.

According to an article from AJC, Etienne was told by a judge that he was a public figure during his ruling.

“You are a public figure, whether you realize that or not,” Judge Marcy Jolles told Etienne during the hearing, according to the Athens Banner-Herald, which was present. “What you do, people see because of your role at the university. I would hope that you make better choices in the future to make a better example for those who are watching.”

Another Georgia football player, freshman Sacovie White, still has charges pending from a few months ago. In May, White allegedly recklessly drove down the wrong way on a street in the downtown area of Athens.

Mondon and Hughley’s arrest makes 19 driving-related offenses for Georgia football players since two Bulldogs players were killed in early 2023. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle and former Georgia standout Jalen Carter was charged with racing offenses for the incident that resulted in their death.

The Georgia Bulldogs have become the punching bag of college football social media during the offseason once again.

The continued arrest of Georgia players for driving-related offenses has brought about a continued joke about Georgia players and their ability to drive safely.

Every time the joke dies down and Georgia no longer becomes the focus of college football social media, another player gets in trouble causing the cycle to restart.

Is reckless driving a right of passage if you’re a Georgia Bulldogs football player? https://t.co/CVS2vfecH9

This is insane. Kirby Smart has no control over his program and doesn’t make players have consequences for their actions. He should be charged with lack of institutional control. His team is a danger to society as a whole. https://t.co/SPpEA8IGbq

And let me guess they won’t miss anything significant. No repercussions means this will continue. Was the death of a player not bad enough?

Kirby Smart needs to change something to stop this
