Jack Tuttle is still a name to watch in Michigan football QB battle

Before long, fall camp will commence for Michigan football and the battle to be the Wolverines starting quarterback will be officially underway.

Michigan had five guys battling it out during the spring but after the spring game, it was clear that there are three potential options. Jaydn Davis had some moments in the spring game but unless he grows by leaps and bounds this fall, Davis will likely redshirt this season.

Davis Warren is another quarterback in the mix. He threw the ball the best out of anyone in the spring game and threw a couple of touchdowns in the second half. However, it’s hard to judge too much on a spring game, especially when hits on the quarterbacks aren’t live.

Alex Orji had a solid spring game too. He missed some throws. But he also made plays with his feet, even though that wasn’t a scripted part of the game plan. Orji will be utilized in the running game even if he isn’t the starting quarterback this season.

Orji got on the field last season with J.J. McCarthy as the starting quarterback and offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell has said he’ll have a role even if he doesn’t start.

Orji needs to prove some things as a passer before he wins the job completely. It might even take a few weeks into the season before the job is won one way or another.

But expect Jack Tuttle to be in the thick of things. The former Indiana transfer was the backup to McCarthy last season and he’s also started Big Ten games before. The former four-star recruit has the talent needed to win and he’s in his second year in the offense.

People have said he has improved and according to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, he’s been the best passer during informal 7-on-7 passing drills this summer. I’ve said that Tuttle could follow the Cade McNamara path to success and with Orji used as a runner too, the offense could work in that scenario, as long as the running game is elite.
