The Wisconsin football staff has kept their eye on a certain 2026 athlete after landing his former teammate last recruiting cycle.
Destin Mitchell, a 2026 three-star edge rusher and tight end from Maryland, has been a recruit under the watchful eye of the Wisconsin football staff. Mitchell played with current Wisconsin football edge rusher Ernest Willor Jr at Concordia Prep, and learned a lot about Wisconsin through him. During a recent interview with Wisconsin Sports Heroics, Mitchell revealed what he is looking for in a program while also breaking down his skills on the field.

While the 2026 class continues to gain plenty of exposure, the Wisconsin football staff has continued to sort through their targets within the class. Among their targets is an interesting recruit with the ability to play two positions on different sides of the ball. Three-star edge rusher and tight end Destin Mitchell, a former teammate of current Wisconsin defender Ernest Willor Jr, has become a top target.
Mitchell is ranked as the 24th tight end in the 2026 recruiting class but has not been logged as a defensive end yet. The Wisconsin football staff is just starting to initiate contact with Mitchell, the recruit tells Wisconsin Sports Heroics, and has allowed Willor Jr to do much of the talking for them early on. Mitchell also stated that Wisconsin, Florida State, Syracuse, Alabama, and North Carolina have been in the most consistent contact thus far.

For Mitchell, while the recruitment process is just starting to truly heat up, sorting through the programs to find his next home will involve learning the ins and outs of each staff. Mitchell is truly intrigued by the value a good staff can add as well as the bonds and relationships coaches form with their players.
Mitchell stated, “I need a strong brotherhood when it comes to each player because that’s important, that family feeling because when I commit I’m looking to stay at the school for all 3-4 years.” Mitchell also stated in reference to his recruitment, “The main thing is great coaches that are willing to actually coach players up and help players grow not just as players but as young men.”
Mitchell knows when pushed by the right staff he can achieve what he wants to achieve on the field. The goal now for the versatile athlete is figuring out which staff and program that will be.
Can the Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Develop a Close Relationship With Mitchell? Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell is shown during spring football practice Thursday, April 25, 2024 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Badgers football team plays their season opener against Western Michigan on August 31.
For Wisconsin, the key to recruiting Mitchell is going to involve focusing on what the staff and program can offer the recruit. Whether he plays offense or defense for the school, Mitchell wants to know that he will be around a staff that is committed to developing each and every player both on and off the field. Mitchell also stated that he is looking for a “strong brotherhood” out of his future coaches in order to bring the staff and players closer together.
If one thing is for sure, Mitchell is someone who is looking at college for the long haul both on and off the field. Another key to the recruitment of Mitchell also involves the class room, as the recruit is heavily interested in engineering and robotics. The recruit wants to make sure the college he attends has a great academic track record with impressive professors.
