Washington Commanders: Shocking Regression Candidate

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders did not have a good 2023 season with a 4-13 record. Washington hopes to change the culture this season with Dan Quinn as the new head coach. Ron Rivera isn’t the head coach anymore and he led them to the postseason one time.

The Washington Commanders made moves to the roster during the trade deadline last season. Chase Young and Montez Sweat were two players who were traded to different teams and other players may not be with this football team for much longer.

If Washington is out of it again by the NFL trade deadline, they will move more pieces. General manager Adam Peters hopes to build the Commanders into a team that can contend for a long time.

He was the former assistant general manager with the San Francisco 49ers under Jon Lynch. San Francisco has been one of the best teams in the NFL over the past several seasons.

Pro Football Network’s Anthony DiBona wrote one regression candidate for the 2024 NFL season for each NFL team. For the Washington Commanders, he picked third-year running back Brian Robinson Jr. DiBona said about a possible regression from the third-year running back by saying:

“Brian Robinson Jr. took on a larger role in 2023, as his role in Washington’s passing game expanded. But given the arrival of Austin Ekeler in free agency, it’s safe to assume that the veteran will be the team’s primary RB on passing downs. Despite the flashes that Robinson showed last season, he will likely take a step back in 2024.”

Last season with the Washington Commanders, he rushed for 733 yards on 178 carries and five touchdowns, along with averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Robinson also caught 36 passes for 368 yards receiving and four touchdowns. He averaged 10.2 yards per reception.

One of his biggest concerns last season was that he fumbled four times and lost two of those fumbles. The Washington Commanders will plan to have Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler split carries in the backfield this season. Washington does not have much depth in the backfield after them. The running game will be very important for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels this season.

If Brian Robinson Jr. does regress, it won’t be by much. Austin Ekeler is looking to have a bounce-back season for the Washington Commanders after leaving the Los Angeles Chargers in the offseason.
