New York Giants: NFL Analyst Thinks John Michael Schmitz Has A Lot To Prove In Year 2

The New York Giants drafted John Michael Schmitz in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He had his ups and downs during his rookie season. The Giants had the worst offensive line in the NFL a season ago and it can only go up from here.

New York gave up the most sacks in the NFL. The New York Giants decided to make a change this NFL offseason with the offensive line coach. Bobby Johnson was fired and Camren Bricillo was hired to be the new offensive line coach.New York GiantsJohn Michael SchmitzAug 18, 2023; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; New York Giants running back Eric Gray (20) celebrates his rushing touchdown with center John Michael Schmitz Jr. (61) and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt (84) during the first half against the Carolina Panthers at MetLife Stadium. Bricillo was the Las Vegas Raiders offensive line coach last season. Las Vegas had a very good offensive line last season and that is what the New York Giants need to become. The Giants also had one of the worst scoring offenses in the NFL a season ago.

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus thinks that 10 players are entering year two who will need to be better than what occurred during their rookie seasons. One of the players who he listed was New York Giants center John Michael Schmitz.

Monson said about Schmitz:

“Schmitz was an outstanding college center, but his measurables coming into the draft were not spectacular. He brings prototypical size but ran a 5.35-second 40-yard dash and had a 10-yard split in the 29th percentile.

His college tape was littered with the types of blocks you need athleticism to execute, so many teams were still very high on his ability to thrive in the NFL, including the Giants, who drafted him at No. 57 overall and handed him the starting job.

He went on to surrender 30 quarterback pressures, including five sacks, earning just a 26.9 PFF pass-blocking grade. His run blocking, a college strength, was below average, and there was very little in the way of positive performances in his first year.

The rest of the Giants’ line was a disaster, and the offense was generally dysfunctional, but Schmitz now enters Year 2 under pressure to rescue his career after a lackluster debut campaign.

This offensive line will have to perform this season. Other than left tackle Andrew Thomas, center John Michael Schmitz will have to be great in his second NFL season. Schmitz has to perform well because Evan Neal has not performed well in his NFL career.

Neal and Schmitz were both drafted by New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen. This needs to be the year the offensive line is finally fixed or at least on the right track.
