Insider Believes 2 WRs Could Be Traded Before Aug. 27

A Kansas City Chiefs insider recently named two wide receivers they think could be traded before the end of training camp if they struggle at practice this summer. The trades could save the Chiefs enough cap space to help add talent in the regular season for other pressing needs.

The Kansas City Chiefs overhauled their WR roomUSATSI 22423367Sep 17, 2023; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marquise Brown (2) makes a first down against the New York Giants in the first half at State Farm Stadium.

The Chiefs’ receiver corps was abysmal last season. They led the league in drops in the regular season. Rahsee Rice’s progression toward the end of his rookie season gave the team hope for the unit in the future. However, his off-the-field issues could put the Chiefs in a bind.

Regardless of Rice’s situation for the regular season, the Chiefs upgraded the position with Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy. Those acquisitions could allow the Chiefs to cut some dead weight.

Kadarius Toney could be traded this summerUSATSI 22130231Dec 10, 2023; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (19) is introduced against the Buffalo Bills prior to a game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

According to Nate Taylor of The Athletic, the Chiefs would save $2.5 million if they trade Kadarius Toney before Aug. 27. He will have to prove a lot in training camp to stay with the team:

This is a make-or-break year for Toney, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Last year, Toney missed training camp and the preseason while recovering from surgery to repair the meniscus and cartilage in his knee. In the regular season, he struggled, dropping multiple passes from quarterback Patrick Mahomes and was benched in December.

Beyond needing to stay healthy, Toney must continue to rebuild his connection and chemistry with Mahomes while also showing he can be one of the top targets for backup quarterback Carson Wentz in the preseason. An argument can be made that Toney is still the Chiefs’ most talented receiver, even after the offseason additions of Marquise Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy. Toney, though, needs to demonstrate consistency in camp and the preseason to secure his roster spot.

Skyy Moore could be cut or traded in AugustUSATSI 21825593 168410494 lowresNov 5, 2023; Frankfurt, Germany, ; Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore (24) reacts after catching a pass against the Miami Dolphins in the second quarter during an NFL International Series game at Deutsche Bank Park. Toney, a former first-round pick by the New York Giants, is quickly headed toward the “bust” category. Skyy Moore could also be heading toward that designation if he doesn’t show improvement in his third training camp with Kansas City. Taylor thinks the Chiefs could release or trade Moore this summer in order to gain $1.29 million in salary cap space:

Similar to Toney, Moore had a disappointing 2023 season and finished the season with a knee injury. Also similar to Toney, Moore needs to reestablish his role within the offense, whether as a primary slot receiver or a trusted all-around receiver, such as seven-year veteran Justin Watson. Moore is likely to compete with Toney for regular-season snaps if both players make the initial roster.

Per Over the Cap, the Chiefs have about $15 million in cap space before Week 1. The extra space created by trading Toney or Moore could help the Chiefs later in the season if they need to bring in a veteran ring-chaser.
