DUNDALK, Md. (WBFF) —

The role of the former president in Maryland’s U.S. Senate race has yet to be fully realized, but the candidates vying for the seat are gearing up for the conversation.

In 2020, former President Donald Trump garnered 32% of the vote in Maryland compared to President Joe Biden’s 65%. With Democratic voters outnumbering Republicans some 2 to 1, it’s not likely for voters to back Trump more significantly in 2024. For Republican Larry Hogan’s U.S. Senate campaign, that means he will likely need to earn support from Democrats if he wants to be successful.

Recently, Trump endorsed Hogan in the senate race, where he’s running against Democrat Angela Alsobrooks. Alsobrooks currently serves as the Prince George’s County Executive.

In an interview with FOX45 Morning News, Hogan acknowledged the Trump endorsement and said he didn’t think it would help him in his campaign.

“It was not something we were looking for,” Hogan said.

During the Dundalk Fourth of July Parade, Hogan talked about the likelihood of another Trump presidency given the concerns swirling around President Biden’s age. Hogan noted that polling suggests Trump may win, especially in swing states, but made it clear he didn’t believe Trump would be successful in Maryland.

“I mean one thing we know for sure is that 120-some days is an eternity in politics that there’s so much going on really, frankly, on both sides that we have no idea,” Hogan said. “And the only thing that really matters how they vote in November.”

For Alsobrooks, the nationalization of the Maryland Senate race has become part of her campaign platform, hammering home to voters why she believes the balance of the U.S. Senate is on the line, and why she said it’s important for Marylanders to send her to Washington.

“This Supreme Court that is radical – that has lost the faith of the people – this is what the Senate would have the ability to confirm Supreme Court justices, the same ones that rolled back Roe,” Alsobrooks said. “The 51st vote is very important.”
