Extremely dangerous, record-breaking heat wave grips much of U.S.

california heat wave temperatures : The National Weather Service warned Thursday that an “extremely dangerous” heat wave is poised to shatter daily temperature records in western and southern states during the holiday weekend.

The extreme heat comes as 28,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes due to massive wildfires in Northern California. The Thompson Fire in Oroville, about 65 miles north of Sacramento, had grown to 3,568 acres and was only 7% contained Wednesday night.

The temperature in Death Valley, California, was 122 degrees. In more populated parts of the Golden State, Sacramento was at 99 degrees and Bakersfield was at 108 Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Downtown Los Angeles and San Francisco were 81 and 75 degrees milder, respectively.

The southern U.S. was covered by heat advisories or warnings on Thursday. Birmingham, Alabama, was 94 degrees, but the heat index – how hot it feels takes humidity into account – was 102 around 5 p.m.

Atlanta was 93; Shreveport, Louisiana was 97; and Tulsa, Oklahoma was 98 degrees, with the heat index making all of those places feel hotter than 100 degrees. The small Mississippi town of Greenwood was 97 degrees, but it felt like 114.

In total, more than 10 million people spent Thursday under a heat warning. california heat wave temperatures

In the West, it will only get hotter and more dangerous.

The National Weather Service has forecast temperatures of 110 to 115 degrees in inland California on Friday and Saturday. Some parts of the desert southwest can reach 120 degrees.

The weather service said afternoon temperatures could reach the upper 90s and lower 100s in parts of the Northwest and Great Basin.

Heat levels in the Mojave Desert, Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley “could pose a threat to anyone if proper heat protection is not followed,” the weather service said.

Las Vegas is forecast to reach 117 degrees on Sunday and 118 degrees on Monday, exceeding the city’s current all-time temperature record of 116.

The weather service advised people to stay hydrated and away from direct sunlight and stay in air-conditioned buildings where possible. california heat wave temperatures

Records have already been broken: Livermore, located on the eastern edge of California’s Bay Area, reached 110 degrees, while San Rafael, in Marin County, California, reached 100 degrees.
