california heat wave temperatures : Firefighters are continuing to battle wildfires across the state as Californians brace for triple-digit temperatures and a dangerous, prolonged heat wave that is forecast to extend into next week.
The most worrying fire on Wednesday was the Thompson fire in Oroville, where several structures were destroyed and thousands of people evacuated as flames approached communities.
Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the fire on Wednesday, noting that it threatened structures, homes, critical infrastructure, and health and congregate care facilities.
We are using every tool available to combat this fire and will continue to work closely with our local and federal partners to support affected communities, Newsom said in a statement.
According to officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Thompson fire grew from 1,000 acres overnight to more than 3,500 acres and was still at 0% containment. The fire was spreading in two directions: north into a more rural area and south toward additional homes and businesses.

Winds from the north continued to push the flames toward Kelly Ridge, a heavily populated area east of Lake Oroville where most people live, said Rick Carhart, a public information officer at Cal Fire’s Butte County station.
Among them were Don and Linda Pederson, who said they wouldn’t get out of the latest fire to trespass on their property. This is not the first time this has happened, the 81-year-old don said.
But it’s the closest he’s come to a fire in his home of 50 years, which sits on an acre east of the Oroville Dam and has been in Linda’s family since 1945. They said they think the fire, at its closest, was about a mile away, but they don’t plan to evacuate until it crosses Highway 162. The line goes through my house, she said with a smile. Even though our whole house is in the evacuation zone, we won’t leave until I know it’s on our side of the road and coming down the hill. He said they have electricity and, as a backup, a whole-house generator.
