DENVER (KDVR) — Crime, health care, unemployment, the economy and immigration are some of the most-searched election issues across the U.S. and Colorado.

The Associated Press partnered with Google Trends to rank election-related topic searches by state and nationwide, with crime topping the list in Colorado and across the country this year.

On this week’s “Colorado Point of View,” political analysts discuss whether those top issues could benefit either major party in the November general election.

Democrat vs. Republican election priorities

Republican analyst Michael Fields said voters trust Republican lawmakers over Democrats on most of those top issues.

“If those can stay the top two issues, I think it’s good news for Republicans,” Fields said.

Democratic analyst and state Rep. Leslie Herod said it’s not so clear cut. She said the Republican response is too extreme, adding Americans want to see a plan.

“(Democrats) have a plan when it comes to the economy. Tax breaks for the wealthy is not what Coloradans and Americans want, but it continues to be something that’s put on the table by the Republican Party,” Herod said.

She argues that if Republican plans remain extreme in the eyes of Americans, more Democrats will get elected in November.
