As the San Francisco 49ers start their playoff journey tonight behind MVP candidate quarterback Brock Purdy we thought it’d be a good time to remember the time Notre Dame had their way with him and Iowa State in the Camping World Bowl.
That’s right, before it was the Pop-Tarts Bowl, it was once known as the Camping World Bowl and Notre Dame played Iowa State in it to conclude the 2019 season.
The concern for some Notre Dame fans before the game was how interested the Irish would be to play in the lesser bowl game following a 10-2 season while it was seen as one of the biggest games in the history of Iowa State’s program.
What proceeded was pure dominance from Notre Dame as the Irish jumped out to a 20-3 first half lead before a second Iowa State field goal cut things to 20-6 before halftime.
Iowa State had no answer for Notre Dame’s run game as the Irish totaled 208-yards on the ground, including an 84-yard gallop by Tony Jones, Jr. which set a record for the longest in the history of the Camping World Bowl.
Ian Book completed 20 of 28 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown to Chase Claypool, who capped his Fighting Irish career with seven receptions for 146 yards and a score to take away game MVP honors.
Iowa State’s offense was slowed throughout the day as Brock Purdy finished with 222 passing yards but no touchdowns. The future NFL MVP candidate was also sacked four times, three of which came from Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.
Notre Dame wound up taking home the win in dominating fashion, 33-9. Check out the best photos from that game below:
