Michael Earley brings in Power 5 head coach as assistant for Texas A&M baseball

When the news broke that Michael Earley would be coming on as the new head man for Texas A&M baseball, one of the first things that insiders mentioned was that the man, though neve having been a head coach before, had a very strong and structured plan for building his staff. That has already begun to come to fruition here less than a day after he officially got the job with the Aggies.

Earley’s first announced hire was Caleb Longley, the former hitting coach and recruiting director for the Longhorns. He consistently brought in top classes and led his batters to record years at the plate, so this was a very strong way to start.

Earley has followed this up by nabbing a sitting Power 5 head coach to come on as the pitching coach for Texas A&M baseball. Talk about a coup!

Travis Brown first reported that Washington’s Jason Kelly would be joining the Aggies as pitching coach, and that report was later confirmed by Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.

This report is accurate. I was trying to wait until Washington finished its team meeting, but Jason Kelly is stepping down as the head coach at @UW_Baseball to be the new top assistant/pitching coach for @AggieBaseball. https://t.co/x9ijqKQo3p

This move works twofold. Kelly was recently at LSU, where he worked magic with a pitching staff that was operating with subpar talent relative to the competition, so we know he’s a good guy for that job specifically. Also, he brings head coaching experience to the role and can help Earley along the way on that front.

This is a very savvy move by the new Aggie skipper. He still has a few spots to fill on the coaching staff, but this is a great start.
