The Kansas City Chiefs could have more contract drama during the 2024 season. With all the talent required to field a back-to-back Super Bowl winner, the Chiefs have had their fair share of contract beef in recent years. A team insider thinks they’ll likely lose a starting offensive lineman before the 2025 season.

The Chiefs had some issues with cap space this season. They were able to extend the contract of star defensive tackle Chris Jones this offseason. But they had to part ways with cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and punter Tommy Townsend. The Chiefs also lost their starting left tackle from last season, Donovan Smith.
Trey Smith could be the odd man out next year

Another offensive line shakeup is expected to come on the interior part of the offensive line. The Athletic‘s Nate Taylor wrote that Trey Smith’s contract will be one for the Chiefs to watch in the upcoming season:
The Chiefs have one of the best trios of interior offensive linemen in the league with center Creed Humphrey, All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney and Smith. But this upcoming season could be their final season together. Smith is entering the last year of his rookie contract.
The Chiefs, understandably, could prioritize retaining Humphrey and linebacker Nick Bolton over Smith, similar to the team re-signing pass rusher Chris Jones over cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. If Smith excels this season, with consistent production while limiting his penalties, he could be the top free agent at his position next season, potentially earning an annual average of more than $20 million.
Creed Humphrey will likely be the priority

Smith and Humphrey have been solid contributors for the Chiefs since they were drafted in 2021. However, it appears like the front office will have to decide on which player to keep before the 2025 season. It would make sense for Humphrey, a two-time All-Pro, to be the Chiefs priority to re-sign. But Humphrey’s trophies will come at a higher price.
