The creator of one of the New York Jets‘ logos, Jim Pons, is suing the team and the NFL, claiming that he has not been paid for their use of the design. The lawsuit was filed in New York on Monday stating that he made the iconic design in the early 1970s, after working as the film and video director for the team according to TMZ Sports.

According to Pons, the Jets were looking for a redesign of their logo in 1978, and once he submitted his logo, team officials loved it and put it on their uniforms until 1997. However, in 2022, the team decided to go back to using the logo Pons created in the late 90’s and announced that they would be using the design going forward in 2024.

Jim Pons’ Claim

Pons said that he was not pleased with the New York franchise and the NFL, believing that he owns the mark that he says he created outside of his job with the team and is now claiming that he is owed a lot of money for his work. He claims that the team and the league are making millions off of his design, and is looking for his fair share of the pie.
The logo creator is now suing for unspecified damages, and asking the judge to order a cancellation of the Jet’s trademark of the logo he designed. He also wants New York to no longer use his logo on their uniforms and merchandise without his consent and compensation.
