Following all the tumult of Jim Schlossnagle’s quick and dramatic exit from College Station to Austin, Texas A&M baseball is now in the middle of an unexpected coaching search. Given the realities of this day and age in collegiate athletics, this means that the portal will fill up quickly—and it has so far for the Aggies.
Many key position players for Texas A&M baseball, with an eye towards the impending July 2 entry deadline, have placed their name in the portal. This is understandable on one level; with so much uncertainty surrounding the program at this juncture, you want to have all your options open.
The position players are one thing, but nearly all of the pitching staff have declared their intentions to return to the Aggies. This lines up with some of the scuttlebutt that’s been around the internet regarding how Schloss interacts with his pitchers. In an interview with Texags, Aggie ace Ryan Prager—still deciding on whether he will head to the big leagues or return to College Station—mentioned that they didn’t interact with the head man very often.
Another thing that he mentioned—something that should be quite heartening to Aggie fans—is that many players currently in the portal still have a “Plan A” right now of returning to Texas A&M.

This aligns well with what Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball reported when speaking with Texags on the same day: that the Aggies, pending the hire, have a great shot at retaining many of their key players who currently have their names in the portal. Apparently, though, this was a headline easily misread by some:

Here’s hoping that Trev Alberts and Texas A&M baseball make a hire that will encourage many of these key contributors to stick it out in Maroon and White.
