Memorial Day 2024 observances in western Massachusetts

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day, a federal holiday honoring military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

22News is working for you with a list of events being held in western Massachusetts commemorating the observance.

FRIDAY, MAY 24, 2024:

SPRINGFIELD: 12 p.m., Commemorative Ceremony in front of City Hall, 36 Court Street.

SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2024:

HADLEY: 2 p.m., Parade begins at the American Legion, 162 Russell Street (Route 9) moving west on Route 9 and turns right up West Street. A brief ceremony will be held around the West Street. Common to the General Hooker Monument.

WHATELY: 10 a.m. Service at Whately Congregational Church. After service a parade begins and moves to the nearby cemetery for wreath laying. Parade moves to the Town’s War Memorial where a service will be held.  At this time the Whately Grange will be presenting the National Grange Patriots Award to Walter Harubin, the town’s oldest veteran, 103 years old, WWII. 

MONDAY, MAY 27, 2024:

AGAWAM: Early morning ceremony at 7 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Bridge, Bridge Street. Parade begins at 10 a.m. at Agawam Town Hall and moving to the Veteran`s Memorial Green for a brief ceremony.

AGAWAM VETERANS CEMETERY: 1 p.m. Lieutenant Governor Driscoll will deliver the Memorial Day address and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony with Executive Office of Veterans Services Secretary Jon Santiago. 1390 Main Street, Agawam.

BELCHERTOWN: 8:30 a.m. Ceremony being held at South Cemetery, 143 Mill Valley Road.

CHICOPEE: 11 a.m. Veterans Memorial Plaza, 650 Front Street.

EAST LONGMEADOW: 10:30 a.m. short parade at East Longmeadow High School with a wreath laying at the flag pole and raising of a new American flag.

EASTHAMPTON: 10:30 a.m. Parade begins at Clark Street, down Cottage Street, up Payson Avenue, turn right onto Park Street, straight down Main Street, around the rotary, back up Main Street to Payson Lane, then conclude on Park Street at the Veteran War Memorials.

GREENFIELD: The Upper Pioneer Valley Veterans` Services District parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Greenfield Middle School then moves down Federal Street stopping at the Federal Street Cemetery for the presentation of a remembrance wreath. Next moving left onto Maple Street, right onto Franklin Street, right onto Main Street. The route stops at the Leavitt-Hovey House Mexican-American War statue and then left to the Greenfield Common for remembrance wreath presentations and concludes at Veterans Mall for a short ceremony.

HOLYOKE: 10 a.m. War Memorial Building, 310 Appleton Street.

HUNTINGTON: 8:15 a.m. Parade starts at Pettis Field and proceeds to Town Common on Route 20 for the ceremony.

LONGMEADOW: 9 a.m. Ceremony on Town Green.

LUDLOW: The Parade steps off at 10 a.m. at Winsor and Worcester Streets followed by a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial.

PALMER: Parade steps off at 10:45 a.m. at St Thomas Church on Thorndike Street, left turn on to Main Street, left turn on to Central Street, left turn on to Converse Street, ending with a ceremony at the memorial in front of Converse Middle School.

PITTSFIELD: Procession steps off at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Fenn and Allen Streets, proceeding to North Street, north to Wahconah Street and then to Pittsfield Cemetery for a ceremony.

STOCKBRIDGE: Parade begins at 12:25 p.m. at Town Hall, 50 Main Street, to the Congregational Church / Town Green where a ceremony will be held.

WARE: 11 a.m. Ceremony at Quabbin Park Cemetery, 557 Belchertown Road to honor veterans of the “Lost Towns” of Enfield, Prescott, Dana, and Greenwich, Massachusetts, which were disincorporated and flooded to make the Quabbin Reservoir.

WESTFIELD: 10 a.m. Parade steps off at Mestek, 260 North Elm Street and marches to Parker Memorial Park for ceremony at 11 a.m.

WEST SPRINGFIELD: Early morning ceremony at 7 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Bridge located on Front Street. Members of the VFW will visit all cemeteries where veterans are interred: beginning at 8 a.m. at Ashleyville Cemetery on Riverdale Street, then Paucatuck Cemetery on Sibley Avenue, St. Thomas Cemetery on Pine Street, White Church Cemetery on Elm Street, the North End Bridge (at the end of Park Avenue), the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial at the intersection of Park Street and Elm Street and conclude at the War Veterans’ Memorial at the southeast end of the Town Common by the North End rotary. Final ceremony at 10 a.m. at the town hall, 26 Central Street.

WILLIAMSBURG: 1 p.m. at the Memorial in the center of town.
