The Subway Series is coming to the plate with the Yankees heading to Citi Field for a two-game set against the Mets.

These two New York ballclubs are currently heading in different directions − but not the way you may think.

Right now, it’s the Mets who are hot, heading back to Queens after series wins over the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers and the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

There’s no denying the Mets are playing their best baseball right now, 13-6 in the month of June entering Tuesday night, and are approaching the .500 mark after a season-high six-game winning streak during their last homestand versus the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.

Meanwhile, the now injury-prone Yankees are easily playing their worst baseball so far, losing three straight series for the first time this year and have dropped seven of their previous 10 games.

The Mets and Yankees split the two matchups last July in the Bronx.

Here’s the starting pitchers for both clubs during this year’s rendition of the Subway Series at Citi Field:

Yankees vs Mets pitching matchups for Subway Series

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m., YES/TBS: RHP Gerrit Cole (0-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. LHP David Peterson (3-0, 3.97 ERA)

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m., Prime Video: RHP Luis Gil (9-2, 2.77 ERA) vs. LHP Sean Manaea (4-3, 4.16 ERA)

Analysis: Gerrit Cole takes the mound for his second start and first on the road during the 2024 season. The reigning American League CY Young Award winner was solid in his first start back after rehabbing nerve irritation in his right elbow that has kept him out since spring training. He struck out five and conceded two runs on three hits in four innings of work on June 19 against the Orioles.

Getting the start Tuesday for the Mets will be David Peterson. The 28-year-old left-hander has won three consecutive appearances after recovering from offseason hip surgery. His last start was his best one yet, going six strong innings with six strikeouts and allowing just four hits while crossing the 100-pitch threshmark for the first time this season in the Mets’ 14-2 victory over the Rangers.

In the second game on Wednesday night it will be Luis Gil vs. Sean Manaea. Gil is coming off not only the worst start of the season — but of his career — as he surrendered seven runs on eight hits and failed to get out of the second inning in the Orioles’ 17-5 thrashing of the Yankees in the Bronx on June 20.

Despite the rough outing, the 26-year-old flamethrower is still the odds-on-favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year.

After back-to-back rough outings versus the Phillies and Diamondbacks (11 earned runs on 13 hits in 9 1/3 innings pitched) Manaea has pitched much better in his last two starts. He’s gone at least five innings and has yielded three or fewer runs in both appearances. The last time he pitched in front of the Mets’ faithful was one of the best of his 2024 campaign, striking out seven and giving up four hits and only one run in five innings.

The Yankees just missed facing former teammate Luis Severino, who had his best start in a Mets uniform Sunday night against the Cubs with a season-high 10 strikeouts and no walks or runs allowed on three hits in a 5-2 victory.
