Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is reportedly having a spring unlike most of his rookie colleagues. The No. 2 pick has an unusual update on his performance ahead of the Commanders’ mandatory minicamp this week.

Caleb Williams, who the Chicago Bears took with the No. 1 pick, has had an up-and-down spring. He’s shown incredible ability with his arm talent but struggled during team periods and the pre-snap process.

The New England Patriots selection with the No. 3 pick, Drake Maye, has had a rough go of it at OTAs. Maye credited the Patriots’ stingy defense for causing him to throw multiple interceptions last week. The Minnesota Vikings’ new gunslinger, J.J. McCarthy, is dealing with accuracy issues.

Growing pains are expected for rookies. Daniels had a few during OTAs, too, and one must remember not to overreact to spring practice reports.

Per JP Finlay with NBC Sports, Daniels had one lousy drive last Wednesday:

Rough series for offense and Daniels. Thrown out back of end zone intentionally on 2nd down, would have been picked on 3rd on under thrown corner fade

Most of the other reports on Daniels were positive from last week.

According to John Keim with ESPN, Daniels showed impressive traits for much of the week:

“So much hinges on Daniels’ development, and at OTAs he displayed a lot of what the Commanders loved about him before the draft: accuracy, touch and work ethic. He has also shown poise and patience. But as Washington progresses with its installation of the offense — and the defense starts to test him more — how does he respond?”

After last season, Daniels came into the 2024 NFL Draft as the hottest quarterback. The 2023 Heisman winner is continuing where he left off with LSU. Daniels is arguably having the best spring of any of his peers during OTAs.

We’ll learn more about his progress during the mandatory minicamp this week, but the Commanders might not have a quarterback controversy in training camp.
